March 13th, 2010

Growing Popularity

That wood flooring is gaining popularity is well known. When home owners see just how beautiful and inexpensive a natural wood floor is they are keen to get it installed in their own home. Hardwood flooring is the first choice for most when they are looking at installing a wooden floor in their home, Oak and Cherry because of the variety of colors and shades are two popular choices, sometimes a more exotic hardwood like Bamboo is the hardwood of choice. But one environmentally friendly choice is also available and that is cork. Cork has been around for centuries and used for floors for a very long time and for a number of reasons, among those reasons is the fact that it is a very long lasting product and that it comes from a renewable resource.

Source

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork trees, which are a variety of Oak The cork is gathered through stripping off the bark on the outside of the trunk, this regenerates in about six years ready for harvesting again. This means that rather than cutting down a tree just once for material, cork farms can strip the bark away again and again; there are still trees being used in bark harvesting that are around 200 years old! For for those of us who care about the environment, this makes cork flooring an ideal material, since it comes from a renewable resource. Even for those who have not considered the source of the material, cork flooring is a wonderful alternative for hardwood floors.

Durability

Often when we think of cork, we think of the soft material used in cork boards but in reality Cork is one of the strongest materials used. Not only is it scuff resistant, it is elastic and hard to damage under normal circumstances, but it also resists water penetration, unlike other hardwood floors, so it is ideal for bathrooms and kitchens, for this reason too, it is used as stoppers in wine bottles.

Because of the hard wearing qualities of Cork, there are flooring installations that have lasted for over 100 years. It is also one of the floorings of choice used in the United States Library of Congress. Cork has excellent insulating properties, so good in fact that it can help reduce heating or cooling costs. This makes it a very good flooring material for basement floors for example. Cork flooring is a good sound insulator too, a fact well known in the building industry for years and useful for home owners in reducing noise transfer from floor to floor.

Aesthetics

Cork flooring has a mottled appearance that we are all familiar with and which makes it different from all of the other wood floors. It comes in a variety of patterns and colors that you can select from to match your own particular decorating style. Because of it’s elastic nature Cork flooring is comfortable and quiet to walk on. – ideal for apartment dwellers.

Health Concerns.

Cork flooring is much more than just an environmentally friendly material,it is a naturally hypo-allergenic substance which does not support the growth of mold or mildew , it does not produce toxins or shed any fibres and it is antistatic. All of these properties are good news for those people who suffer from allergies

Natural Cork Flooring

March 12th, 2010

With the myriad of flooring types available, shoppers tend to lean toward those that are most popular at the time. Unfortunately, this practice can cause a consumer to miss out on some great flooring options.

One of these hidden gems is cork flooring. Imagine a floor covering that is attractive, comfortable, environmentally friendly, durable and affordable. When most people think of cork, they think of a wine bottle or a cork board, and due to this lack of consumer awareness, this product is commonly overlooked. In order to appreciate this material, you really need to understand its unique characteristics.

Origin

Cork is actually the bark of the cork oak tree found in the Mediterranean. Portugal is the largest supplier with over 30% of the world’s cork trees and 70% of the world’s cork production. Every nine years the bark is harvested by hand with the average tree yielding about 4,000 corks.

The bark is honeycomb in nature, containing 90% air that can be compressed to 40% and then quickly returning to its original shape. This feature creates a natural shock absorber.

Benefits

Due to its air like composition, walking on cork is like walking on air. Its comfortable walking surface is perfect for kitchens where you are standing for lengthy periods of time.

Cork has a natural beauty with a rich, varying grain, similar to wood. It also comes in many different patterns and tile sizes from various manufacturers.

The same feature that makes the floor comfortable creates a natural noise reducer. It’s extremely quiet to walk on and reduces the impact if an object is dropped on its surface. It’s insulating effect make cork a great choice in a bathroom over radiant floor heating or even installed over cold concrete floors.

Cork is an environmentally friendly product in many ways. Since the bark from the tree grows back nine years after harvest, it’s a reusable and sustainable product. It also contains suberin, a substance that is resistant to insects, mold and protects cork from rotting when exposed to moisture. Suberin is naturally fire resistant and cork doesn’t release any toxic gases when it burns.

The durability of cork makes it a perfect choice for virtually any room in the house, including those high traffic areas. It has been successfully used in churches and other public buildings since 1898.

Disadvantages

Due to its resilience, heavy furniture can dent the flooring, so it’s important to use castors or furniture pads under table legs. Just as with wood, an excess of water can damage the finish. It shouldn’t be used where you have problems with moisture or flooding.

Costs

The cost of cork flooring compares to high-end laminate or hardwood and runs approximately $4 to 6$ per square foot.

Maintenance

Cork floors are extremely easy to maintain with regular sweeping or vacuuming. Damp mop the floor monthly with a mild detergent and very little water and avoid using abrasive or ammonia-based cleaning products.

The flooring requires up to five coats of urethane sealer, which will last several years. A dulling floor can be refreshed with another coat.

Online Business with a cork board?

March 12th, 2010

The reason many fail at their online business is that we spent most
of the time thinking on the negative, constantly beating ourselves up.
We wake in the morning with doubt after doubt, thinking we are
going to fail…to this I say, get a CORKBOARD.

Are you stupid? Are you afraid of failure? Do you believe that you
will inevitably fail at your business because you think things like that
could never happen to you? Well, you are incorrect about yourself. I
ventured into a few businesses just like everyone else and these
three questions above rang loudly in my mind every morning. The
worst part about that fact was the fact I listened and, eventually, failed
what ever it was I was doing.

Eventually though, I met my mentor, my guide to success. The first
thing he told me was to get a cork board. It had to be the strangest
thing I had ever heard when he said this. I figured he would have me
downloading program after program and bookmarking every outlet
for marketing ones self on the web. Nope, he told me to get a cork
board, and here is why.

Many of us before we found success repeatedly beat ourselves up.
We never took the time to count the many blessings we had in our
lives before we took up the business we were in. So I purchased a
cork board and began to pin up photos of everything I have a reason
to smile about. Wife, children, friends and the goofy things I enjoy doing
like surfing, and fishing.

Next I began to hang up notes of things that I had begun to accomplish,
and below that, things I needed to accomplish. I looked at my blessings
then back to the accomplishments and put two and two together of why
he had me do this…I truly am not a failure. As a matter of fact, you and I,
the individuals taking on our right to create a business, to create a future
for those on our cork board? well, we will succeed. In the end, we have
already succeeded.

At first it seems rather strange the fact that a simple tool can do so much
for your self esteem, but it did. I felt gratitude in the most simple of things. I
found it in the fact that when I woke up at 5am to jump online and write this,
that at the same time I made the coffee for me and my wife and even did the
dishes from the previous night. You are worth a cork board, never forget that!
Be thankful for what you have at this moment, and later, you will appreciate
everything as you continue to place more and more upon your cork board.

Gratitude is a giant step in the direction of self esteem. Working with top earners in the online business and marketing industry, it was gratitude, and the lack of hyperbole that attractied David J. Cork Boards Designed With Style And Purpose

March 12th, 2010

A cork board makes life simpler for administrators, receptionists, teachers, resident assistants, and so on. Cork boards allow them to post important messages, notices, upcoming events, or other memos and announcements, for all to see with ease. Currently, there are many different styles of corkboards to choose from and use in your establishment. A corkboard is not just limited to wall mounting anymore. Modern styles include: free standing, cork floor stands, enclosed swing frame designs, as well as combination cork boards.

This article discusses modern day cork boards in further detail.

Combination corkboards maximize wall space by providing 2 essential bulletin boards framed into 1. Having your corkboard displayed with another board that you can draw on, provides an organized way to drive your messages home.  By having these two essential message boards built into one, it opens up an array of display possibilities, and gives you flexibility in what you decide to display. What’s more, you are saving money by getting two message boards for the price of one.

3 popular styles of combination boards:

1. The first style includes a cork board on one side combined with a chalkboard on the other. This combination unit typically comes with a box of chalk and an eraser.

2. The second style features a cork board next to a dry erase white board. This combination unit is typically provided with a box of colored markers and an eraser.

3. A third option features an alternative to cork, but is worth mentioning for those looking for a more upscale display board. This unit includes a fabric board alongside a white dry erase board. This option generally comes with a box of colored markers and an eraser as well.

With each option most displays will come with a convenient storage tray to keep your chalk, markers, and eraser readily accessible. Most units are encased by anodized aluminum frames to provide a sturdy border, and also match most decors.

Cork floor stands, or free standing cork boards are excellent alternatives to simply mounting the boards to a wall. These cork board stands provide unlimited flexibility to where they will be placed, or how often you will move them. Cork floor stands offer you a wider range of display possibilities. They are the ideal display fixtures to place in any heavily trafficked hallway, school foyer, or office lobby. Many of these floor-standing cork boards are double sided, enabling you to catch your visitors’ eyes while they are both coming and going.

Some of the free standing corkboard units also include literature racks or brochure holders attached to them. This additional holder or rack creates another opportunity for a guest or consumer to take information away with them. Patrons will not only be able to see what’s on the board, but they can also walk away with more literature to gain a better understanding of what was being offered.

Many cork floor stands are enclosed by swing frames that lock to keep important documents protected within. Enclosed cork boards are better explained in the following paragraph:

Enclosed cork boards are offered in many styles and sizes. The corkboards are encased by swinging, locking frames to protect your important notices, event flyers, announcements and documents, from damage and public tampering. Most enclosed bulletin boards feature either aluminum or wood casings that come in a wide range of color finishes. To suit your decor, many wood frame finishes include cherry, walnut, mahogany, oak and black. Most aluminum frames will include silver, bronze, gold, and black. The swing frames are built to suit virtually any size cork board you are looking to enclose. Enclosed cork boards are offered with a choice of one, two, or three locking doors, depending on the size of the corkboard within. To update or change messages in these displays, simply unlock the door locks and swing the door or doors open. Your new notices will be held in place by push pins or thumb tacks and kept safe under lock and key once the doors are closed again. These cork boards are perfect for placement in auditoriums, college dormitories, staff break rooms, community centers, offices and more.

With today’s corkboards, your display options are virtually endless. The many possibilities allow you to find a cork board to suit your needs whether that be ease of use, safety, or maximum viewing potential.
